Posted 26 October: [Working with academic communities to build scientific understanding](https://openai.com/index/building-scientific-understanding-with-academic-communities/). - **Math:** a proof of a long-open problem about how [waves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_equation) spread out (the local smoothing conjecture). If it holds, it also settles related puzzles, including the [Kakeya conjecture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakeya_set). - **Computer science:** a claim that the [Exponential Time Hypothesis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_time_hypothesis) is false. That's a widely held assumption that some [logic puzzles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_satisfiability_problem) can't be solved much faster than by trying every option. A lot of other work is built on it. - **Physics:** a claimed mathematical proof that the theory of the [strong force](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strong_interaction) ([quantum chromodynamics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_chromodynamics)), which holds atomic nuclei together, is on solid footing. - **Who checks it:** OpenAI asked outside experts to volunteer as "shepherds" and organize groups to read and test each paper. OpenAI calls the papers "raw research data." - **Where it stands:** as of today, none of the three has been confirmed by independent experts. Checking claims this big usually takes months.
